Q&A with Anna Valley’s new Business Development Manager; Carlos Morono

Meet our new Business Development Manager, Carlos Morono, who has joined to help manage Anna Valley’s business growth for the integration team. We caught up with him to find out more……

Tell us about your role?

I joined the Anna Valley team as a Business Development Manager on July 16th.

My role is to promote the group within our current and new market sectors, including corporate, higher education/public sector and retail.

For me, it’s also about building strong and lasting relationships with new and existing clients alike.

Tell us a bit about your previous roles and experience?

I have over 25-years’ experience in the AV industry, working in the corporate, higher education, financial and retail sectors.

During my career, I have participated in the design and delivery of various projects and have been lucky enough to work with some renowned companies including; Disney, the London Institute of Banking and Finance, the London School of Commerce, TUI UK & Ireland, Network Rail, HSBC, as well as a multitude of Schools, Colleges and Universities including the prestigious Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

You’ve worked in the corporate, retail and HE sectors. What are some of the key differences in AV across these sectors?

Although HE is its own unique sector, the needs and requirements of the key stakeholders within these institutions are very similar to that of a corporate client. Both want to ensure that they don’t fall behind in the use of technology, whilst making sure they get a good return on their investment.

However, HE requires most of its suppliers to be on frameworks, which run for several years. As a supplier, knowing your competition is key in any competitive tendering exercise so to have those limited to a handful is useful. This sector is like a big family network with most heads of media knowing one another.

There is also a strong drive for new builds within the HE sector too, possibly meaning an increased demand for new technologies, which moving forward, can only be a good thing for everyone involved.

I find the retail sector particularly interesting. It has the latitude to speculate, as well as to experiment, with new, bold ideas, which perhaps, wouldn’t see the light of day in other sectors. The move by many retailers towards large format displays, especially LED, is great news for Anna Valley, as we are established LED experts! It also helps that I’ve worked with many retailers throughout my career to help bring AV to their customer offering including; Tesco, Sainsbury’s and M&S.

What excites you about working in the AV industry?

There is a lot to like about the AV industry, it has been one of the constant and growing fields in the economy in recent years. It’s an evolving market and it means you never get stale.

I love technology, it’s always changing, which means I’ve always got something new to discuss with potential and existing clients. It makes my role interesting and that little bit easier.

Why Anna Valley?

I have been following the fortunes of Anna Valley for quite some time now and I’d heard lots of great things about the business, before I joined. I like the fact that the company goes above and beyond in what it offers and provides clients, it’s very organised and extremely professional. I haven’t been here very long, but I already feel valued – there is a strong team culture! My boss, Nick Shaw, truly understands what is required to build strong long-term business relationships with companies who regard you as their partner and not just a supplier.

What is the best thing about your job?

Meeting new people, developing business relationships and being actively involved in helping increase company’s profile in the industry.  The thrill of winning new business is also a highlight for me and I love knowing that a client has chosen me/us due to much more than just a low-price tag!

You have strong Spanish connections; how do you feel about the ISE relocating to Barcelona in 2021?

Yes, my parents were born in Spain before moving to the UK in the 1960s. I’m fluent in Spanish and have very strong Spanish roots. Being born and raised in England, I have had the benefit of a bi-cultural upbringing which helps when dealing with our ever-increasing multi-cultural client base.

The ISE show is extremely popular and it needed a bigger venue. Fira de Barcelona is one of Europe’s most prestigious convention and conference locations, so it makes sense for them to move. Spain is a beautiful country, I’m slightly biased however. It’s great for me, because my sister lives just North of the venue and it will give me a wonderful opportunity to spend some time with family, whilst on business. The best of both worlds!

I really enjoy woodworking – I’ve made a three-seater outdoor sofa for my garden, which gets plenty of use during the warm summer evenings.
