Supporting professional development at the ITM Achievement Awards

Anna Valley recently teamed up with specialist production partner The Production Department to support the Institute of Travel Management’s (ITM) inaugural Achievement Awards, acting as a sponsor and providing audio visual technology and crew for the event. As well as celebrating the success of the organisation’s mentorship scheme and recognising excellence across the business travel industry, the awards offered a unique opportunity for junior event professionals to gain hands-on experience.

Professional development through industry-leading mentorship

The launch of the ITM Achievement Awards follows the success of the ITM Mentoring Programme, a highly sought-after scheme which took on a new group of candidates in January 2022. The programme provides mentees with unparalleled access to leading industry experts in a one-to-one mentorship capacity.

Mentees are paired with mentors based on their skillsets and career aspirations, with the programme aiming to provide guidance and education in a supportive environment, whilst also developing new talent in the travel industry. Since its launch in 2019, the programme has matched 40 mentees across three intakes, who have completed the scheme in either one or two years.

Celebrating mentees and their achievements

The success of the mentorship scheme spurred the creation of the ITM Achievement Awards, an event which recognises mentees graduating in 2022, acknowledges mentors for their contribution to the scheme, and celebrates excellence across the travel industry. The awards took place at the new-look Leonardo Royal Hotel in Tower Bridge London and celebrated a number of categories like ‘Game changer’, for showing exceptional drive and a bold approach, ‘Service excellence’, which recognised dedication to excellent service over the last year, and ‘Mentee of the year’. Categories were sponsored by travel industry heavyweights like Hilton, AMEX GBT, United Airlines, and many more.

Creating opportunities for young talent

But the ITM Achievement Awards wasn’t only an event that celebrated professional development in the travel industry, it also offered an opportunity for junior event professionals to gain invaluable practical experience through a unique partnership between the ITM and The Production Department. Rather than charging ITM for event services, The Production Department gave their time on this project for free and, in return, ITM agreed that the awards would be used as a training ground for new entrants to the event industry, under the supervision of seasoned event professionals.

To that end, the event company called on the Anna Valley team to help deliver the show, with The Production Department’s Rebecca Hubbard commenting, “We’ve reached out to Anna Valley on many occasions for event support in the past and we knew we could trust them to deliver this show.” As AV partners for the event, Anna Valley used a combination of the venue’s and their own audio-visual inventory along with set décor elements and a team of audio, video and lighting specialists to support the awards on the 1st of July 2022.

As live events return, one of the biggest challenges that the event industry now faces is the shortage of skilled staff. Our future success relies on our ability to upskill new entrants to the industry quickly and effectively – and there’s no better way to do this than by giving them the opportunity to work on real events under the supervision of experienced professionals. That’s why we jumped at the chance to work with The Production Department and ITM on The Achievement Awards.
