A season of award shows
While for many the summer of 2021 will be remembered for redefining what ‘the traffic light system’ means, for the Anna Valley team the last few months have been characterised by a busy schedule of award shows. Our awards season featured both virtual and on-site awards shows for new and returning clients, with Anna Valley providing services ranging from video displays and camera systems to extended reality environments and live streaming services. Here’s a snapshot of some of the most exciting shows we helped deliver recently.
GQ Men Of The Year Awards
The biggest event on the GQ social calendar, the GQ Men Of The Year Awards took place at London’s Tate Modern on 1 September 2021. The awards were hosted by Idris and Sabrina Elba and winners included Ed Sheeran, Oscar-winner Sir Anthony Hopkins and first-time novelist Quentin Tarantino. Working with Timebased Events, Anna Valley provided full video and camera departments for the awards show which featured an impressive LED stage backdrop, a four-camera setup for on-site visuals and press distribution, and additional displays for sponsor and social media activations. Anna Valley also facilitated a live video link to Los Angeles and onsite technical support for Prince Harry’s presentation of GQ’s Heroes Of The Year Award to the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine team.
GRM Daily Rated Awards 2021
In 2020 creative experience and performance designers, Black Skull Creative, worked with Anna Valley to transform the GRM Daily Rated Awards into a blended reality experience that challenged the audience’s perception of reality and complied with social distancing restrictions. This year, they returned to our virtual event facility to continue the digital evolution of the entertainment platform’s annual awards event which aired on GRM’s YouTube channel on 16 September 2021. This year’s hosts, model Jourdan Dunn and actor/comedian Michael Dapaah, presented the awards from a sleek set featuring a curved LED backdrop, high gloss floor and a ceiling that combined mirrored panels and lighting elements. The physical set was enhanced with an extended reality cinematic overlay which created the illusion of scale and enhanced the live performance of Legacy Award winners, Heartless Crew, with dynamic graphic overlays. Anna Valley provided full video, camera and sound support for the show, which included 196 panels of AVX3 LED, a camera system that combined cameras on peds with fixed AR cameras and a remote dolly system, and an extensive gallery.
The British Takeaway Awards
Described as the Oscars of the takeaway world, the British Takeaway Awards celebrate Britain’s best local takeaways and the people behind them. This year’s red-carpet event was hosted at the Old Billingsgate on the 6th of September and was presented by Top Gear’s Paddy McGuinness. Event agency, Blueprint Partners, enlisted Anna Valley to provide an extensive camera system, the master control room, full comms and a substantial technical team for this premium awards event. The camera system was made up of 17 cameras, including 6 studio cameras, 10 hotheads and a jimmy-jib rig, and was used for live on-site coverage, highlights and press packages. Due to the nature of the event venue, the MCR was split across six different spaces which meant that the comms, consisting of both wireless and matrix systems, was vital to both the event and production teams.
TM Forum Digital Transformation World Series Conference & Awards
After a massively successful virtual event last year, TM Forum returned to Anna Valley’s virtual event facility for the Digital Transformation World Series conference and awards in 2021. Working with Common Ground Creative, Anna Valley once again helped deliver four weeks of broadcast magazine-style programming, live-streamed to TM Forum’s international audience of ticketholders via the Expo platform from 22 September to 14 October 2021. The conference showcased over 55 hours of live-streamed content and more than 360 remote and in-studio speakers and included two separate awards events. This year’s show wasn’t only hosted at Anna Valley and technically facilitated by our team, the set was also designed and delivered by recent addition to the Anna Valley Group, Production Plus, bringing the entire project delivery in-house.
Independent Music Awards 2021
2021 marked the second virtual ceremony for the Independent Music Awards, but the first time that Anna Valley has helped deliver the awards which recognise the creativity and innovation shown by independent artists, labels and individuals in the UK. Working with Black Skull Creative once again, Anna Valley was responsible for the LED video backdrops, cameras, audio, media servers and web streaming of the awards show to the AIMS website, Facebook page and YouTube channel on the 25th of August 2021. The main award show and performances were filmed on a custom-built set with augmented reality overlays at Neg Earth’s studio, with additional elements captured at Anna Valley’s virtual event facility.
Despite the easing of COVID-19 restrictions and the return of in-person events, the opportunity to reach vast digital audiences is still driving demand for virtual and hybrid awards shows. Whichever approach you choose, as the projects outlined above demonstrate, audio-visual solutions are a key component to add drama, excitement and glamour to any awards show.
