Helping LRI turn a velodrome into an event space for GOSH Charity event
Once a year, event producers Lipfriend Rodd International transform the Olympic Velodrome at Lee Valley Park into an exclusive event space for The Velodrome Challenge, a charity event for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (GOSH Charity.) This year they relied on Anna Valley to provide full video, lighting and sound for this important fundraiser which sees two very different activities taking place in the Velodrome in just one day.
The first part of The Velodrome Challenge, held on the 10th of October 2019, invited corporate teams to join fellow cycling enthusiasts, including Olympic legends Victoria Pendleton and Mark Cavendish, in a racing event at the historic velodrome built specially for London’s 2012 Olympics. Attendees took part in training sessions, competed in a team sprint race and received sports massages and nutrition advice from seasoned professionals during the course of this exhilarating day. The centre of the sports venue was then reinvented into a gala space for an exclusive dinner, silent auction and intimate Q&A session with Olympic cyclists to raise funds for GOSH cardiac research.
While the AV requirement for the event was relatively straightforward, the unusual venue was a complicating factor as Anna Valley project manager, Ben Marles, explains, “The challenge was that we were coming into a venue that isn’t an event space by nature so we had to think creatively to make it work. The key was not to fight the venue but to work with it.” With only twenty-four hours to prepare, the Anna Valley team worked through the night before the event, focussing most of the AV provision on the gala setup where it would have the most impact. Truss towers were built and a variety of moving lights were rigged to make a feature of the velodrome track and to cover the stage and audience areas, while festoon lighting was strung across the seating area to make the space feel more like a function venue and less like a sports hall. The stage setup was completed with a 6m x 4m, AV 3 (3.9mm) LED screen, with video playback and show graphics controlled via a Barco seamless PDS 902. The cycling challenge required only a simple D&B PA speaker system for announcements, audio playbacks and interviews.
“We’re proud of what we’ve achieved with Anna Valley to make the most of the iconic venue for the Velodrome Challenge 2019. The event was a huge success raising money for GOSH Charity.”
